Birge

Doing His Part

Inspired by the 54-0 score of a disappointing Harvard-Yale football game, Walter Birge '35 began recruiting and interviewing "scholar-athletes" in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. His "S&S," or schools and scholarships, work continued for 40 years, despite moves to Brussels, Belgium, and Kingston, Massachusetts. In recognition of Birge's extraordinary commitment, the Harvard-Radcliffe Admissions Office has named him the winner of the 1997 Hiram Hunn '21 award.

The award honors the late Hiram Hunn '21, who interviewed candidates for admission to Harvard College for 55 years. The winner's name will be formally announced at the HAA's fall meeting on October 23, and the award presented to Birge at the national schools and scholarships directors' meeting the following day.
