One of the works on display in Gods, Kings, and Tigers: The Art of Kotah, at the Sackler this fall.

SPECIAL. The annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony celebrates achievements that cannot, or should not, be reproduced, and features Nobel Laureates Sheldon Glashow, Dudley Herschbach, Richard Roberts, William Lipscomb, and others. This year's festivities, at 7:30 on October 9 in Sanders Theatre, include the "Win-a-Date-with-a-Nobel-Laureate" contest and the world premiere of an opera about the Big Bang. EXHIBITIONS. At the Fogg, About Face: Artists' Portraits in Photography closes on October 12. Continuing exhibits include Fragments of Antiquity: Drawing upon Greek Vases; The Art of Identity: African Sculpture from the Teel Collection; Investigating the Renaissance; Sublimations: Art and Sensuality in the Nineteenth Century; France and the Portrait, 1799-1870; Circa 1874: The Emergence of Impressionism; and The Persistence of Memory: Continuity and Change in American Cultures. The Sackler offers Gods, Kings, and Tigers: The Art of Kotah, which opened August 30; Rocks, Mountains, Landscapes, and Gardens: The Essence of East Asian Painting closes September 14. An exhibition of photographs by the alumnus who is also America's foremost field cartographer opens in October when the Museum of Cultural and Natural History installs The Highest Peaks: Photographs by Bradford Washburn. Call 495-3045 for exhibit details.

FILM. Selections offered by the Harvard Film Archive this fall include a Rainer Werner Fassbinder retrospective; a series about Indian culture, held in conjunction with the Sackler Museum's exhibit Gods, Kings, and Tigers: The Art of Kotah; and the "Classics of World Cinema" series. MUSIC. The Harvard University Art Museums sponsor violinist Joseph Lin and pianist Benjamin Loeb in an all-French program on September 14 at 5:30 at the Fogg. Call 495-4544 for information.
