Each year the HAA awards the Harvard Medal to three individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service to the University. On Commencement afternoon, President Neil L. Rudenstine will present this year's honors to William G. Anderson '39, Rita E. Hauser, L '55-'56, and Renée M. Landers '77 at the HAA's annual meeting.
In 1982, when William G. Anderson retired after 17 years as University Marshal, President Derek Bok made one request: "Find me another Bill Anderson." Not content to be his own brand name, Anderson went on to lead his class to a record attendance level, as well as gift-size and class-participation records, at their fiftieth reunion. He is now a member of the 1999 reunion-gift steering committee.
Rita E. Hauser has helped create both the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard (with her husband, Gustave, J.D. '53) and the Women's Leadership Challenge Fund within the University Campaign, of which she is national campaign cochair. She also serves on the executive committee of the Committee on University Resources, as well as on the Kennedy School's visiting committee.
Renée M. Landers sat on more than a dozen visiting and standing committees during her tenure as an Overseer (1991-97), eventually serving as president of the board in the last year of her term. Earlier, she worked tirelessly for the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association as vice president (1985-87) and president (1987-89). A former Radcliffe trustee (1987-89), Landers is currently a member of the visiting committees of the University art museums and health services.
