ANTICO FORNO, 93 Salem Street, North End, Boston, (617) 723-6733. Voted best traditional Italian restaurant by the Improper Bostonian. The Boston Globe raved, "Everything cooked in [the wood-burning oven] seems blessed." Lunch and dinner. Catering and corporate events available.
SWEET CHILI RESTAURANT, 470-472 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington Center, Mass. 02174, (781) 646-2400. Sweet Chili Restaurant has much to offer--beautifully prepared meals, excellent service, very reasonable prices, and a wide variety of dishes that are mainly Thai. Tempting entrées such as "Dancing Squid," "Drunken Noodles," and "Excited Chicken" are hard to resist. According to the Boston Globe, "Excited Chicken" ($9.25), a colorful dish of marinated sliced chicken and brightly colored vegetables in a pastry shell, is so named because diners invariably say, "Oh, wow," when they see it. Lunch and dinner.
TERRAMIA RISTORANTE, 98 Salem Street, North End, Boston, (617) 523-3112. "Terramia has become a hit with Boston insiders. The 40 seats are filled with savvy diners (including owners of other restaurants paying the ultimate compliment)," stated Bon Appetit in 1996. Fine wines available. Corporate events can be accommodated. At the top of the 1998 Zagat Survey's "Italian List for North and South," with a high rating of 26. Dinner only.
UPSTAIRS AT THE PUDDING, 10 Holyoke Street, Cambridge, (617) 864-1933. The atmosphere, like the menu, is elegant: bowls of fresh flowers on the table, pink tablecloths, chandeliers, and rich hunter-green walls stretching up to high ceilings--a setting worthy of the venerable Hasty Pudding Club, this restaurant's downstairs neighbor. The food also upholds that club's tradition of excellence without pretense. Lunch and dinner; weekend brunch.
