SPECIAL. On February 20,the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations sponsors the annual celebration of ethnic diversity at Harvard, Cultural Rhythms. Call (617) 495-1527 for details about the daylong festival of food, music, literature, and dance.

EXHIBITIONS. At the Fogg, Building Representation: Photography and Architecture, Contemporary Interactions opens January 23. Continuing exhibits include Gian Lorenzo Bernini: Sketches in Clay; The Art of Identity: African Sculpture from the Teel Collection; France and the Portrait, 1799-1870; Circa 1874: Emergence of Impressionism; Sublimations: Art and Sensuality in the Nineteenth Century; Investigating the Renaissance; and American Paintings after 1950. At the Sackler, Symbol and Substance: The Elaine Ehrenkranz Collection of Japanese Lacquer Boxes closes on January 3, but Mastery and Elegance: Two Centuries of French Drawings from
the Collection of Jeffrey Horvitz
continues through January 31. Remaining on view are Divinely Inspired: Images of Mystics and Mendicants; Empress, Goddess, State: Depictions of Women on Ancient and Byzantine Coinage; Coins of Alexander the Great; Selections from the Nelson Goodman Collection; and a wall drawing by Sol LeWitt, in the lobby. At the Busch-Reisinger, A Laboratory of Modernity: Aspects of Art in Weimar Germany continues until January 10. An exhibit of the photographs of German- French artist Wolfgang Schulze, Wols Photographs, begins on February 13.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History shows off the exhibit The Beetle Boom: Beetle Stories and Beetle Secrets in the Friends' Gallery. Call 495-3045 for specifics.

THEATER. The American Repertory Theatre presents Racine's great tragedy Phaedra, through January 14, and The Merchant of Venice, until January 22. Don DeLillo's new play, Valparaiso, debuts on January 29. Ibsen's The Master Builder begins February 12. All shows are at the Loeb Theatre. Call the box office, at 547-8300, for tickets.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals #151, I Get No Kick from Campaign, kicks off on February 11 and has its last performance in Cambridge on February 21. Call 495-5205 for ticket prices and showtimes.

FILM. Among the series in January and February at the Harvard Film Archive are Five Directors--showcasing the work of Kiarostami, Antonioni, Akerman, Cassavetes, and Bresson; Jazz on Film; and a run of films by Jane Campion, director of the acclaimed movie The Piano. MUSIC. In conjunction with a conference on Schoenberg's work (see "Programs"), the Mendelssohn String Quartet performs his String Quartets no. 1 and no. 2 on February 26, and the Juilliard String Quartet performs String Quartets no. 3 and no. 4, and the String Trio, the next evening.
