Introducing the first-ever Harvard Magazine 36, a list that celebrates the positive impact Harvard alumni are making around the nation and the world—across fields, disciplines, locations, and stages of life. Their work might be happening on a large or small scale; their stories might be known, or might deserve a wider audience. Harvard loves its Latin, and we love the idea of capturing people in medias res: in the thick of the action.
Why 36? We chose 36 as a nod to 1636, the year of Harvard’s founding. We’re offering a snapshot of the contributions Harvard graduates are making, with the hope that in future years, we’ll bring you more.

How We Make the Harvard Magazine 36 List
This year, Harvard Magazine is recognizing a cohort of 36 alumni whose work reflects exceptional leadership, contributions to their communities, and promise across a wide range of fields.
The selection process unfolds over several months and draws on nominations from alumni, faculty, and the broader Harvard community, as well as outreach to leaders across industries, nonprofits, academia, and the arts. Candidates may be nominated by others or put themselves forward for consideration. All submissions are reviewed carefully by the editorial team and a small selection committee.
In evaluating nominees, editors consider a range of factors, including the scale and significance of their work, evidence of impact, originality, and future potential. While there is no single formula for selection, particular attention is given to individuals who demonstrate initiative, sustained accomplishment, and a clear sense of purpose in their respective fields.
From a large pool of candidates, a shortlist is developed for further review. Finalists are evaluated in consultation with a group of independent advisors—distinguished figures with expertise across disciplines—who provide perspective on the nominees’ contributions and trajectories. All selected honorees undergo editorial vetting prior to publication.
The list is designed to reflect both distinction to date and the promise of continued impact.
There is no prescribed path to inclusion. The 36 seeks to recognize individuals whose work is not only accomplished, but consequential.

A: No. The Harvard Magazine 36 is an editorial project of Harvard Magazine. There are no fees associated with nomination or selection, and inclusion cannot be purchased under any circumstances.
Q: Do multiple nominations increase my chances?
A: No. Nominations serve to introduce candidates to the editors; more nominations will not give candidates an advantage. A single, thoughtful nomination that clearly articulates a candidate’s achievements, impact, and promise is far more valuable than multiple submissions.
Q: Is it better to nominate myself or be nominated by someone else?
A: Both are equally valid. A nomination from a prominent figure may draw initial attention, but all submissions are evaluated on their substance. What matters most is a clear, compelling account of the nominee’s work—its scope, measurable outcomes, and future potential.
Q: What if I choose the wrong category?
A: Applicants should select the category that best reflects their work. The editorial team reviews nominations holistically and may reassign candidates across categories where appropriate.
Q: How and when will I know if I’ve been selected?
A: Selected honorees are notified shortly before publication. Those not selected are not individually contacted.
Q: Can I be included more than once?
A: No. Individuals may be featured on the 36 list only once.
Q: If I'm not chosen for this year's list, will my name be included in the nomination pool for next year?
A: No. Nominations will need to be made for each new year.

A: Candidates can be any age as long as they have graduated with a degree from one of Harvard University's 13 degree-granting schools.

A: Harvard Magazine editors independently verify claims against third-party sources. All finalists also undergo a background check.
Q: Are specific metrics or milestones used to decide who is selected?
A: No. Candidates may have demonstrated contributions to their communities in many different ways.
