Plan ahead for ArtsFirst '99, Harvard's annual celebration of the arts, to be held May 6-9. Capping the weekend's activities, President Neil L. Rudenstine will award the Harvard Arts Medal to David Hays '52, founder of the National Theatre of the Deaf. Call 495-8676 for specifics.

EXHIBITIONS. At the Fogg, an exhibit of drawings by Ellsworth Kelly opens March 6, with more of his work displayed at the Sackler Museum. Building Representation: Photography and Architecture, Contemporary Interactions closes on April 11. At the Sackler, Divinely Inspired: Images of Mystics and Mendicants ends on March 28. At the Busch-Reisinger, an exhibit of the photographs of German-French artist Wolfgang Schulze, Wols Photographs, closes on April 25. THEATER. At the American Repertory Theatre Don DeLillo's new play, Valparaiso, closes on March 17, and Ibsen's The Master Builder ends its run on March 21; both are at the Loeb Theatre. FILM. Among the offerings at the Harvard Film Archive in March and April are the films of Robert Bresson; a documentary about the Louisiana State Penitentiary, playing March 12 through March 14; and the series New German Cinema. Call 495-4700 for a complete schedule.

MUSIC. The Harvard Art Museums' free midday organ recitals continue on March 4, 11, 18, and 25, and April 8, 15, 22, and 29 (all concerts at 12:15 p.m. in Adolphus Busch Hall). Call 495-9400 for additional details.

On March 5 at 8 p.m., the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra features this year's concerto contest winner. Peabody professor of music emeritus Elliott Forbes delivers a preconcert lecture at 7 p.m. On April 16, the HRO presents Yehudi Wyner's Prologue and Narrative for Cello and Orchestra, with soloist Andres Diaz; the composer lectures at 7 p.m. Call Sanders Theatre, at 496-2222, for tickets.

Contemporary music fills Paine Hall when the Harvard Group for New Music concertizes on March 5, and when the Fromm Players perform on March 12 and on April 16; all concerts are at 8 p.m. Call 496-6013 for details.

In Sanders Theatre, on March 6 at 8 p.m., the Harvard Wind Ensemble features the music of Henry Brant, and, on April 17, composer Randy Weston joins the Harvard Jazz Band in a tribute to his and his collaborator Melba Liston's music. Call 496-2263 for information.

The Harvard Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society welcome Cornell University's Glee Club and Women's Chorus for a concert on March 13 at 8 p.m. The Collegium Musicum sings on April 10 at 8 p.m. Call 496-6013 for details about the concerts, both in Sanders.

On March 14 at 3 p.m., Nuremberg organist Werner Jakob takes out all the stops in the annual E. Power Biggs Memorial Bach Recital in Adolphus Busch Hall. Matt Curlee of the Eastman School of Music continues the Sunday celebrity series, on April 11 at 3 p.m. For more details, call 495-9400.

The Harvard University Art Museums and the Cambridge Society for Early Music present the Flanders Recorder Quartet on March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fogg Museum courtyard. Call 423-2808 for more information.

The Houghton Library Chamber Music Series features harpsichordist Robert Hill on March 19, and the Eroica Trio performing Haydn, Schubert, and a new composition by Brazilian composer Raimundo Penaforte on April 19; both concerts are at 8 p.m. at the Houghton Library. For details, call 495-2449.

A cappella offerings include the Harvard Din & Tonics on March 20 at 8 p.m. and the Harvard-Radcliffe Callbacks and Harvard-Radcliffe Opportunes on April 24 at 8 p.m. Call 496-2222 for tickets to the Sanders Theatre concerts.

On April 23 at 8 p.m. in Paine Hall, the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence, the Mendelssohn String Quartet, perform a Mozart quartet and Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, with guest Charles Neidich. PROGRAMS. Special events at the Harvard Museum of Natural History include a gallery talk about endangered species, on March 31 at 2 p.m.; a lecture by the director of the Harvard Forest, David Foster, followed by a book-signing of his new work, Thoreau's Country: Journey Through a Transformed Landscape (see "Thoreau's Wildness"), on April 22 at 6 p.m.; and, in association with NASA's Astrobiology Institute, a series entitled "Understanding Life in the Universe." The free observatory nights at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics each include a lecture, a short film or video, and telescopic viewing from the observatory roof, weather permitting. On March 18, Giovanni Fazio of the Center discusses "Exploring a New Cosmic Frontier with the Space Infrared Facility."
