Women’s Hockey

At midseason, the defending national champion Crimson stickwomen (13-2-2, 11-2-2 ECAC) retained their number-one ranking, but not without sweat. Twice they have been ranked number two, facing the top-ranked team—and both times have prevailed, over New Hampshire (4-2) and Northeastern (5-3). Juniors Tammy Shewchuck (21 goals, 19 assists) and Angie Francisco (14 goals, 26 assists) led the team in scoring with 40 points apiece.

Men’s Hockey

The men’s team, (7-10-1 overall, 6-6-1 ECAC) hit a tailspin after Christmas, going 1-5 in the last six games before the midseason break. The lone victory, however, was a 3-2 win over Yale that coach Mark Mazzolini called the icemen’s best overall performance of the season. Brothers Dominic and Steve Moore (at left) led the team in scoring.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team (7-9 overall, 2-2 Ivy) notched both its early Ivy wins over Dartmouth (66-59 and 48-43). Forward Dan Clemente ’01 started the first six games and was nationally ranked with a 21.2 point-per-game average before a detached retina in his right eye put him temporarily out of action. Before his injury, Clemente set a school record by making a three-pointer in 23 consecutive games.

Women’s Basketball

The women hoopsters (9-5 overall, 3-0 Ivy) scored a season-high 93 points in handling Yale, 93-77. They have also mastered Dartmouth and Brown. All three Ivy wins have come at home. At midseason, junior Melissa Johnson (see “Sisters in Thin Air,” January-February, page 89) led the netwomen in scoring with a 12.4 point-per-game average. She was also the top rebounder, averaging 11.4 per game.

In January, a Boston Globe feature article reported that women’s coach Kathy Delaney-Smith had undergone a lumpectomy for breast cancer in December. Her biopsy results and general prognosis are good, and she will not miss any games. In this, her eighteenth season with the Crimson, Delaney-Smith has won her 250th game and 150th Ivy contest.
