Harvard Awards Teaching and Mentoring Prizes

Harvard College and GSAS recognize outstanding faculty contributors.

At the May 5 meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Edgerley Family Dean Hopi Hoekstra announced the following annual recognitions for teaching, advising, and mentoring.

Harvard College Professors

Recipients of the FAS’s highest honor for faculty members who make distinguished contributions to undergraduate teaching (in general education and within the concentrations, and in advising and mentoring), and in their work in graduate education and research:

  • Daniel Carpenter, Freed professor of government
  • Jeff Lichtman, Knowles professor of molecular and cellular biology
  • Hannah Marcus, professor of the history of science
  • Samantha Matherne, professor of philosophy
  • Ariel Procaccia, Lin professor of computer science

Roslyn Abramson Award

Conferred for outstanding undergraduate teaching, as demonstrated through the ability to communicate with and inspire undergraduates, accessibility to undergraduates, sensitivity to undergraduates’ needs, and devotion to teaching:

  • Gage Hills, associate professor of electrical engineering
  • Julia Mundy, Loeb associate professor of the natural sciences and of engineering and applied sciences

Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Prize

Presented by the Undergraduate Council to recognize superb teaching by members of the Harvard faculties who teach undergraduates:

  • Jason Mitchell, professor of psychology
  • Andrew Murray, Smith professor of molecular genetics

Everett Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Award

Conferred by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences’ Graduate Student Council to honor faculty who go out of their way to offer support and guidance to graduate students’ research, education, professional and personal development, and career plans:

  • Katrina Forrester, Loeb associate professor of the social sciences
  • Andrew Gordon, Folger Fund professor of history and professor of East Asian languages and civilizations
  • Patrick Slade, assistant professor of bioengineering
  • Quinn White, assistant professor of philosophy

Walter Channing Cabot Fellows

Recipients honored for their outstanding contributions to their fields, including their notable publications:

  • Sven Beckert, Bell professor of history
  • Stephanie Burt, Loker professor of English
  • John Campbell, Olshan professor of economics
  • Joyce Chaplin, Phillips professor of early American history
  • Christina Cross, associate professor of sociology

FAS Sabbatical Recognition Program
