The earliest coin among Harvard’s holdings, dating from 600-550 b.c., this rather battered specimen, made of electrum, shows on the obverse a bearded, winged figure. This makes it unique, the only extant coin of the period bearing a human image. Where it was made is not known, but it is similar in other respects to coins that were widely issued at the very beginnings of coinage, about 630 B.C., in western Asia Minor and cities on the Greek coast.
