Daniel Finkelstein ’62cl died February 25 in Towson, Md. He was an ophthalmologist and retinal surgeon at the Wilmer Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital for more than 50 years. He helped pioneer laser treatments for retinal vein occlusion, retinopathy, and macular degeneration and conducted the first national collaborative clinical trial on retinal vein occlusion. He volunteered his services in the free medical clinic at Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts in Washington, D.C., and also in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He was a founding faculty member of Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and past chairman of the Johns Hopkins Hospital ethics committee. His passionate interest in medical ethics led him to study Roman Catholicism in the 1990s; he went on to complete a master’s degree in theology and later converted to Catholicism, making many trips to Lourdes with members of the Order of Malta, a philanthropic organization. For decades he provided free care to diabetic patients suffering from serious retinal disease. He leaves two children, Carla, Ed.M. ’91, and James, and a sister, Jean Ratner.
