Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2022

 Thursday, May 26, 2022
commencement.harvard.edu

Since 1642, Harvard’s Commencement Exercises have brought together the community unlike any other tradition still observed in the University. Degree candidates, with those who supported them, are anticipated to participate in our event that celebrates Harvard’s 371st graduating class this spring—the first time we anticipate gathering as a whole in two years.

The health and safety of our community is paramount. The University will continue to monitor public-health conditions, but we believe we can safely celebrate by following COVID protocols.  If conditions require adjustments to our plans, we will update students and our website.

We ask that any interested readers carefully review the guidelines governing COVID protocols, ticketing, regalia, security precautions, and other important details, which are available online at https://commencement.harvard.edu/.

Commencement Day Overview

The Commencement Exercises begin when the academic procession is seated in Tercentenary Theatre and the sheriff calls the “meeting to order.” Three student orators deliver addresses, and the dean of each School introduces the candidates by groups for their respective degrees, which the president then confers. Toward the conclusion of the ceremony, the graduating seniors are asked to rise, and their degrees are conferred on them as a group by the president. Honorary degrees are then conferred before our Commencement speaker delivers an address to the graduates. Following this, the exercises are adjourned.

Diploma-granting Ceremonies and Luncheons:Graduates and their guests return to their respective undergraduate Houses or graduate and professional Schools.

Additionally, we invite our graduates to learn more about the Commencement for the classes of 2020 and 2021, held on Sunday, May 29, by visiting https://www.harvard.edu/commencement-for-the-classes-of-2020--2021.

Please note: University guidance and policies may change based on current conditions and federal, state, and local requirements at the time.
